This recording is the result of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona research project: ‘Iberian
humanisms. Circulation of texts, genres and discourses of power in the Catholic monarchy (16th-18th
centuries)’. As the title indicates, our research deals with the oral repertoires that have travelled from the
European continent to Latin American countries, and the romancero is the main protagonist, both in
terms of themes and literary and musical structures, without forgetting the Sephardic romancero. For this
we have had the support and advice of the greatest current specialists in the research on romances,
without them this recording would be impossible: Sandra Boto, Paloma Díaz Mas, Susana Weich-Shahak,
and a large list of names impossible to reproduce here due to their length. Some of them are present on
this CD in their own voices, both in the speeches we hear throughout the recording and in the penultimate
track, ‘Las Voces Sabias’.
The repertoire performed includes romances of oral tradition from different cultures and Romance
languages: Castilian, Catalan, Galician, Italian, Portuguese and Brazilian, or Occitan and Sephardic.
