"Vicente Martín y Soler (1754-1806), also known as "Martini, lo Spagnolo", made an outstanding contribution to the development of eighteenth-century opera. Among all his operas, "Una cosa rara", with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte and premiered in Vienna on November 17, 1786, aroused special interest for several reasons. It synthesized the most important characteristics of the opera buffa style of that time. The composer developed a rich but at the same time clear and diaphanous texture, and manifested a great mastery in orchestration, endowing it with brilliant contrasts and great delicacy in nuances.On the other hand, "Una cosa rara" was within the sociocultural context of its time, and hence its success among audiences in different European countries.
