Scott Hamilton was born in Providence (Rhode Island) in 1954, home to another famous native, the ‘abominable’ H.P. Lovecraft and come to think of it, the singer Nelson Eddy but they are from truly separate worlds, and let me not digress. Hamilton, tenor sax, has been mixing it up all his life; Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, Zoot Sims and Stan Getz, and other variations, even with some Johnny Hodges backstage. In December 7, 2015, Hamilton landed in Benicásim and with all his “rulers and pencils”, together with New York pianist Dena DeRose, Catalan bass player Ignasi González and German drummer Jo Krause, played a long and great set of his favourite musical game: Geometry. The concert was recorded live, and this disc brings us right into the event with an extraordinary natural and warm sound quality. It includes the themes “Lady Bird”, “Willow weep for me”, “Garota de Ipanema” “The way you look tonight” and closing the disc, a rare jewel, “La Rosita” piece composed by Paul Dupont & Allan Stuart that it sounds younger, more charming and sassier than never, in the hands of this exquisite geometrician of trends. Scott Hamilton has defined his own universe, while honouring the history of a musical world that is capable of reinventing itself, without losing its soul, and that is the very special something we sometimes call swing.
