This is our second volume of Down Home Blues. We bring together the ‘well known’ to the ‘scarcely remembered’ finest exponents of this music from post-war 1950’s Texas. Our first 100 track 4 CD volume of Down Home Blues contains 25 tracks from Texas, of which none are duplicated here. Acknowledged Blues historian Neil Slaven describes with his introductory chapter to that set, the atmosphere and the feel of the jook and the bars that made home to this no frills, hard driven blues scene – The Juke Joint. Neil continues here in his essay accompanying this set, exploring the world of Blues in Texas where we know everything is bigger and better! For Down Home Blues, it really was the richest source. This is the rich loam from which this compilation has sprung.
By now you might have realised that Texas Blues, in or out of the juke joint, is a fabulously mysterious and exciting genre to investigate. Hopefully, this generous compilation will inspire you to investigate further. Who knows what you might find? If it comes from Texas, it’s bound to be good!
