“Hierro y Verde” (“Iron and Green”) is the new album by the renowned cellist Iris Azquinezer, which completes her trilogy of Bach's Solo Cello Suites, interweaving them with her own compositions.
Bach's Fifth and Sixth Suites dialogue in this album with works such as 'Catábasis' (a descent in life into the world of the dead), 'Entréme donde no supe (San Juan en Seda)' based on the poem by Saint John of the Cross, or 'Verde Vida', an invocation to Al-Khadir, master of Sufism, who is credited with the discovery of the waters of life and, therefore, immortality.
If we consider Bach's Suites as the stages of life, this “Hierro y verde” would represent old age and the afterlife, after “Azul y Jade” (“Blue and Jade”) (2014, childhood and adolescence) and “Blanco y Oro” (“White and Gold”) (2019, youth and maturity).
“Why not identify Bach's Cello Suites with different colors? Iris Azquinezer culminates her synesthetic (and spiritual) project from the same premises with which she began it, not only translating the notes that Bach composed into sounds but also infusing them with the colors that she sees, encouraging us to share and look through her kaleidoscope.
