ALICE & THE WONDERS
THE BORDERLINE MUSIC (TBM0321CD 02)
One of the best news we have in these turbulent times is the return of Alice & The Wonders. The Barcelona band led by the firm and captivating voice of Alejandra Rueda has this new album in their hands: "I am". A reaffirmation that, on the one hand, means a return to the trenches and, on the other, the reaffirmation of a mature sound that complements and broadens the horizons marked out in his previous work ("At my door", 2016).
Without losing the punch that characterizes them, they delve into new sounds, like the Rocksteady that welcomes us to this album, where there is no lack of a nod to Toots & The Maytals. It is these surprises that make a name great, leaving their comfort zone and offering more samples of a musical mastery far from stereotypes and exercises in style. Personality above all. The conviction of what is done. Without a doubt, the wait has been worth it.
Beyond the frenetic rhythms that also give soul to a good part of this album, Alice & The Wonders sign warm and, at the same time, forceful mid-tempos that shake our souls and force us to listen to them over and over again. Songs like "Today," for example, deserve much deeper and more incisive attention. Only then can we lose ourselves in soft, sweet and unexpected textures that transport us to unprecedented tenderness.
