For a young gipsy singer born in the Barcelona neighbourhood of Gracia bolero music wasn't an easy option. Unless not as easy as flamenco or, specially, Catalan rumba, the most traditional rhythm among the members of the gipsy community of the area. But it was bolero what seduced since he was just a child, when he was enchanted by the passionate love stories singed by those like , and bolero was what he choose forty years ago, when started working as a professional singer, becoming his most distinctive field of work. In spite of the hard beginning days, when no one seems to understand the idea of a gipsy bolero artist, finally was able to convince even the most reluctant about his extraordinaire talent, to built a successful career and become a star not only in his native Spain but at the other side of the Atlantic Sea too, specially in Mexico and Cuba, where he?s known as the and . Cuba has, and probably has always had, a reserved space in the deep of s heart. Its music and people, as well as its way to infused bolero with the traditional exuberance of African rooted music. The Spanish singer has admired Cuban bolero as a celebration of love and passion while in other territories boleros are not a celebration, but pieces of the tragedy of disappointment in love and treachery. prefers to sing to the joy of love and romanticism better than do it to pain and suffering and maybe this is the reason why he's so popular in Cuba, just because he understands bolero in the same way Cuban people do. (') probably is the most 'Cuban' album ever recorded by the Spanish singer. On it he has done something he wanted to do for a long., long time: to sing his own renditions of some of the best known boleros () retrieving to it its original Cuban taste. To accomplish his purpose travelled to and secured the help of , one of the outstanding figures of contemporary Cuban music, as producer and arranger. Together with him and a bunch of talented musicians (including members of the ) entered the legendary studios to record which probably is one of his best albums ever.
