The idea for this project originated in mid 2014. That year was the 200th anniversary of Adolphe Sax's birth, the inventor of the saxophone, so we decided there was no better way to celebrate it than providing the repertoire for the instrument with some new pieces, as an opportunity to put in our two cents and encourage the artistic creativity of young Spanish composers. And so, we decided to commission three pieces for saxophone quartet from composers Victor Vallés, Javier Utrabo and Javier Vázquez.
Around these three compositions, we have included other pieces by foreign composers (for all the worth that concept might still have in this day and age): Patrick Burgan (France) y Jacob Ter Veldhuis (Holland), who figured already in our repertoire, as well as The Dark Side, for saxophone quartet and improvising soloist (with the participation of saxophone player Mauricio Gómez) by Jean-Denis Michat (France), who is not only a composer but also one of the great names in classical and contemporary saxophone playing.
