Most musicians look for that inexplicable something that beats alive beneath the songs. What they call duende, energy, magic. The genius that inhabits the melodies and appears when he is invoked well, with a calm heart and the right word. There are albums that should be celebrated because that hot substance beats in them. It happens here, in “Sempasúchil”, the album that brings together four great musicians from the Galician scene around a handful of good songs. An album of instrumental music in pop language recorded in a jazz approach, all together in an identical breath to capture that atmosphere where the melodies become credible, where the improvised and the felt are shown in all their simplicity. Guitarist Antonio Casado, who has just collaborated with Lucinda Williams, Maceo Parker and Carla Bruni, crosses his pop arrangements of classics like Wichita Lineman with the jazz vibraphone of Ton Risco, a regular collaborator of Jorge Pardo. Between them and the consolidated rhythm section composed of Alfonso Calvo (double bass) and Miguel Cabana (drums) harmonies are woven that are played restrained, without fuss, with a fabulous solidity and a delicacy that moves the layman. This is not jazz. This is not pop. These are instrumental songs, hypersensitive breaths that speak of powerful truths with simple language, capable of capturing even those who do not travel these worlds. The instruments do not say “I am here”, but “let's talk together”. And together they create, formulate, build something new and definitive.
