Church Music at the Cathedral of Barcelona in the 17th Century
In this programme we wish to present a selection of the music that was written in the times of Gabrieli, Monteverdi, Schütz, Purcell, A. Scarlatti and Charpentier at the Cathedral of Barcelona. Together with the Monastery of Montserrat, this cathedral was the most important centre of original musical production in Catalonia. Bearing this in mind, we have chosen eight church works with different formats and styles, which have nevertheless been selected among the production of the four best-known chapel masters that carried out their work over these one hundred years in Barcelona and who illustrate four basic stages of the controversial and insufficiently-known Baroque seicento.
