When Mozart wrote his trio "Kegelstatt" K 498 for viola, clarinet and piano in 1786, the clarinet was a
relatively new instrument. This trio was actually the first well known composition for this instrumental
formation. It was written three years before his clarinet quintet K581 and five years before the clarinet
concierto K622. Mozart probably had little idea that his trio would set a president for composers like
Schumann and Bruch who also wrote for the same combination.
